Expert formulas

For 15 years, Guerlain Research has been pushing back the frontiers of cellular longevity. Now it has identified a new mechanism that plays a key role in longevity: cellular respiration. More effective thanks to the discovery of the extraordinary powers of a duo of orchids, new Cell Respiration™ technology delivers superior efficacy inside the skin. It regulates cellular respiration and combats hypoxia* or oxygen deficiency, a phenomenon that increases with age. The cells can breathe again and maximise energy production which boosts cell regeneration*. All the visible signs of ageing are minimised: wrinkles and fine lines fade, the skin regains firmness, density and elasticity, the complexion is even and more radiant. The skin is infused with a new breath of life.

An exclusive complex enriched with precious Abyssinian oil lies at the heart of the new Rich Cream. It supports the skin’s self-moisturizing abilities to teach dry skin how to function normally again. Abyssinian oil offers remarkable nourishing and lipid-replenishing properties. It is rich in omega 3, 6 and 9, fatty acids, known to strengthen the hydrolipidic film and enhance the structure of the skin’s natural barrier.  The Rich Cream combines intense nourishment with a non-greasy texture for skin that is soft and smooth, without an oily feel or shine.
Day after day, the skin becomes more resistant and the comfort of normal skin is restored.

Ingredients

The Orchid, a rare and precious raw ingredient, is the very essence of the exceptional  complete care range Orchidée Impériale. A genuine longevity prodigy, the orchid is the most developed species in the plant kingdom. Convinced of its exceptional potential, Guerlain set up its first research centre ever to be devoted to an ingredient: the Orchidarium®.
The mission of this International Research Center on the Orchid and skin longevity is to discover, understand, study and explore the potential of orchids and their biological and cosmetic properties to benefit its research on skin longevity. Guerlain Research runs three interrelated and complementary centres:

The Experimental Garden — Geneva (Switzerland)
A greenhouse where a collection of Guerlain orchids is housed in order to study and identify the most remarkable species.
The Basic Research Laboratory — Strasbourg (France)
The first basic research unit dedicated to the study of orchids and the identification and analysis of longevity molecules.
The Exploratory Nature Reserve — TianZi (Yunnan, China)
A nature reserve - a pillar of biodiversity and conservation - where wild orchids are protected and reintroduced into their natural environment. Learn about our work in Yunnan on guerlain.com

The Orchidarium revealed the extraordinary powers of a duo of orchids, including Gastrodia elata, an orchid essential to traditional Chinese medicine.

The Abyssinian oil is produced from the seeds of the Crambe abyssinica plant, native to Ethiopia, are collected in the summer, upon reaching maturity, then pressed. The precious Abyssinian oil selected by Guerlain Research is extracted using an environmentally friendly mechanical cold-pressing process. The oil is exceptionally pure and offers remarkable nourishing and lipid-replenishing properties, along with a lightweight, silky-smooth finish.

Guerlain Research now adds precious diamond powder to the new Orchidée Impériale Cream formula. This rare raw material is able to capture light energy and diffuse it in all directions thanks to the "faceted" nature of diamond. The result is an instant sophisticated radiance.

Directions for use

Experts at the Guerlain Institute have developed an exclusive technique which, combines professional massage with breathing exercises to maximise the benefits of the Rich Cream. This unique sensory experience is also an opportunity to spend quality time reconnecting with yourself, to restore harmony and inner balance.

1- Before application: Breathe & prepare the skin
On a clean, dry face that has been previously washed with Orchidée Impériale Cleansing Foam, apply pressure slowly and firmly with the fleshy part of the fingers on the chin, the corner of the mouth, under the nose, between the eyebrows, above the arch of the eyebrows and at the level of the temples. Breathe in as you press and breathe out on release.

2- Applying the Rich Cream: Smooth
After applying your lotion and serum, take some cream with the spatula and apply with the fleshy part of the fingers to the chin, cheeks, forehead and nose, taking care to smooth the skin outwards from the middle of the face.

3- After application:
ENERGISE
Clench your fists and place them on your cheeks. Pressing firmly, work upwards with a rotational movement while breathing out forcibly. Repeat on the jawline, forehead, neck and finally the décolleté in time with the out-breath.
RELAX
Place your left hand on your forehead and your right hand on your right cheek. Gently slide both hands simultaneously towards the left around the contours of the face. At the same time, lean your head towards the left and breathe deeply. Do the same on the other side. Repeat three times.

Guerlain is a legendary French perfume house with 175 years of outstanding business, passion and tradition. Guerlain has always used luxurious and rare materials for its perfumes, such as French vanilla or ylang-ylang from their own plantations in Comoro Islands. Beside that, Guerlain has been an innovator in use of synthetic materials: Jicky (1889) was the first perfume to which Aimé Guerlain added a synthetic component—coumarin.

The Guerlain house was founded by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain in 1828. Starting with common hygiene products, Guerlain was also creating perfumes for his customers, and over time he developed the business into a highly successful company that became an official perfumer for several European royal courts.

After he died, his son Aimé Guerlain became the main perfumer. His famous perfume Jicky, created in 1889, became the first "modern" perfume. It is also believed that it was he who created the so-called "Guerlinade"—the Guerlain signature base notes used for creation of multiple Guerlain perfumes.

His nephew Jacques Guerlain was the next nose of the Guerlain house. He created some of the most well-known perfumes of the house, including L'Heure Bleue (1912), Mitsouko (1919) and Shalimar (1925), which is one of the best loved perfumes of all time.

Jean-Paul Guerlain is the grandson of Jacques Guerlain. He first assisted, and then created his first "solo" offering, the now-famous Vetiver (1959). His other well-known creations include Habit Rouge, Chamade, Eau de Guerlain and Nahema.

The Guerlain perfume house was a family business until 1994, when it was acquired by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH). In 2002, the family legacy of Guerlain ended with Jean-Paul Guerlain's retirement, though he continues to work for the house as a consultant. Thierry Wasser was named the official in-house perfumer of Guerlain in 2008.

The flagship Guerlain boutique in Paris was thoroughly renovated and reopened in June 2005. The house at the magic address 68 Champs Elysées, now not only a boutique and the main office but a museum as well, welcomes customers again.
